Do you know what I am on about? Link here if not.

I’ve been on a bit of a spammers bitch session this week. With Twitter (yes I do love Twitter), spammers seem to be using the trending topics as a way of getting their porn link out there.

I urge you all to tag these with Twitters new function. Link

Something that is interesting is how certain #hashtags or topics become popular and some not. How do you achieve this purposely?

As with all viral concepts, it’s not a science but an art… But certain variables do affect the outcome. Number of followers the first user has, the influence they have with these followers, the influence that the users that RT the first instance has and so on. So many factors that result in a topic becoming popular, before it reaches a critical mass.

Not taking into account other non-Twitter ways of driving adoption.

So if you want something to fly, you need a large base (technically) to make it do so.

News topics feature heavily in the trending topics list but what is interesting is when you see a #hashtag or topic that is a Twitter phenomenon. Such as right now on Twitter the topic ‘Goodnight‘ is showing up on the trending topics list.

Trending Topics Formula

(ID*F)/I*C = Likelihood of topic becoming popular/trending

ID = Idea/Concept
F = Number Of Followers
I = Influence
C = Chance
