So yesterday the new iPhone named the iPhone 4 was announced by Mr Jobs himself. As you would expect it is trending on Twitter (Under a number of hash tags and keywords).

So what is all the fuss about? What is new about this iPhone?

A summary if what has been announced:

1. New Design – 9.33mm thick. 24% thinner than iPhone 3GS. Micro sim tray. Front facing camera. Camera and LED Flash on the back. Antennas integrated into steel structure. Scratch resistant glass.

2. Display – Retina display which has 326 pixels per inch. 3.5 inch screen.

3. Chip & Specs – New A4 chip designed and made by a Apple. Battery is bigger, with up to 6 hours 3G browsing and 10 hours Wi-Fi. 10 Hours video, 40 hours music and 300 hours standby. Up to 32GB of storage.

4. Data Speed – Quad band HSPDA/HSUPA. 7.2mbps down. 5.8 up. 802.11n

5. 3-Axis Gyro – Pitch and roll. New motion APIs

6. Camera – 5 Megapixel camera. Record HD video at 720p and 30fps. iMovie for iPhone

7. iPhone OS 4 – Renamed to iOS 4

8. iBooks – Same features that are available on the iPhone.

9. iAds – “You will be able to add iAds to your app in an afternoon” said Steve Jobs. Advertisers get 60% of the revenue. Clients already include: Citi, Unilever, AT&T, Chanel, GE, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, Geico, Campbell’s, Sears, JC Penny, Target, Best Buy, Direct TV, TBS, Disney. iAds will be online from 1st July.

10. FaceTime – Videochat app for the iPhone 4… only for iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 calls. Also only enabled over Wi-fi to start with, 3G coming next year if they are ale to broker a deal with the networks.

Originally found on the iPhoneblog, here are some tips on keeping your battery going…

• Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
• Avoid heat – do not leave your iPhone in a hot car or in direct sunlight.
• Optimization of your settings. Yes, some of these are no brainers but can be effective. Simple things like:
  1. turning off Location Services,
  2. turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use,
  3. fetching new data less frequently,
  4. setting the brightness of your screen below 50%,
  5. turning of the EQ while listening to music,
  6. turning off 3G while not surfing the internet (Yes, we said it…)

If all else fails, then go for a full restore… not from backup but a completely new install of your firmware! This should get rid of any little bugs that may be draining power. Again thanks to the iPhoneblog for this info!

As announced today, Vodafone UK will also be stocking the iPhone. This move brings 3 UK operators into the iPhone game, covering a huge percentage of the UK market.

This move will surly mean a spike in sales for Apple in the coming months. One thing that has put me off the iPhone (on O2) was the customer service I experienced using them in the past. Consumers now have choice, meaning a more competitive game, resulting in (hopefully) value for money tariffs? In other countries there has not been a price war on iPhone tariffs, but with the choice expanding for UK consumers the networks will need to do something to win consumers over the competition.

Orange and Vodafone will now be stocking the iPhone in the coming months, T-Mobile seem to be leaving this one alone… I am sure this has something to do with their recent merger with Orange?

Augmented Reality… have you heard? If not check this out from Contagious!

I do love the iPhone and this is another reason or me to purchase the 3GS, I would 100% use this app! Great idea, I think over the next 6 months we will be seeing a number of AR apps arrive.

Check out this post by the iPhone dev team. The 3GS is officially unlocked and jail broken. It was only a couple of weeks ago I was waiting up all night for UltraSn0w to be released for the 3G. These guys at the iPhone dev team are giving a lot of people the opportunity to own an iPhone on the network they want, for this is salute you!

One thing that did annoy me though was all of the people chasing and slating these guys because it took a little longer than expected to get the FREE software out. REMEMBER these guys are doing this for FREE, there is no need to get irrate! Anyway, thanks to their work many of us have our iPhone unlocked & Jail Broken = lots of fun…
