Google are taking on Microsoft by creating their own OS, announced on the Google blog yesterday. The software will be open source and first targeted to netbooks. This could be great for users, giving them another option to windows… it just depends on how many programs will be coded for this new platform. Oh look the answer…

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

From what I can see so far, this will work for users that just use the net and don’t require their computers to run a number of applications. This looks a like a development for the masses. Could we see all applications built by web technology from now on? Meaning cross-platform problems are a thing of the past? Maybe this is a side effect of cloud computing and the development of services such as OnLive.

Programs like Logic that are just available for OS X could potential be cross platform, if the technology works and can be ported across to web based technology. An interesting development… where could this lead us?

I have now reached level 30 on ‘SpyMaster‘ and it seems to have finished… well kind of. It is still in beta so I imagine the full game will be an endless drama of madness and experience points. Although fun (at times) and this game did turn into an addiction I think I should stay clear of the full version when released.

Although all of my ‘SpyMaster‘ Twitter followers will now know my ‘Attack’ and ‘Defence’ sums I have a screenshot below.

Time to retire from virtual spy life.

A few weeks back PlayStation launched this nifty viral/community shooter competition/webgame for Killzone.

At first the Killzone toolbar put me off. I had to install yet another FF plug-in, I was quite dubious. After I got over my initial fear, I did give it a go. At first it took a little while to come up and for the game to start, but when it did I found myself shooting the S*** out of bad guys periodically over the day to rid the web of Helghast scum (end quote). One thing I noticed and quite liked was when I when to sites like Facebook (yes I was at work, purely research) the game would engage. So when you visit a site that is technically a ‘time waster’ the game starts. Nice thinking. On the webgame site competitions are coming soon, better improve my aim for when these kick in.

An explanation into the game was featured in today’s Contagious, check it out. A great way of engaging with the hardcore fans and gamers. I am sure an abundance of office workers across the globe have enjoyed the rest bites from real life, to shoot some Helghast up. Looking forward to seeing how the competition element goes. A game for a game as a marketing strategy is always a tough call… not wanting to detract from the main product. I have to say though the simplicity of this is great, the length of time each battle last is spot on. The hardcore gamer is not stupid, they know they are playing a fun ‘Killzone’ themed webgame, not the real thing. Right? If you are too busy you are not forced into playing… I think they have got it bang on in terms of functionality.

This is a really creative concept that has never been done before, as far as I know. Great one off, I just hope agencies don’t keep trying this. It works well, don’t kill it! Back to play, need to get above 200 on the leaderboard.

This is amazing, on the Sim City tip, which I happened to LOVE as a kid! There is even a mention of Squirrels in the into copy!

This online mind mapping tool MindMister has sprung up that allows you to brainstorm collaboratively across the web. For me I still feel the live brainstorm in a room of people staring at each other uncomfortably is one of the best ways of coming up with ideas. Could this work though without the one on one interaction? Do we need one on one anymore. Maybe it will help break down barriers allowing the shy people to shine?

If you have clients/collegues across the globe this could be a nice way of partaking in this process. I guess the only way to see is to try it out…

I think this is awesome. Spotify a free to listen music service! Ok you have ads very 20 mins, but there is a massive collection of artists to listen to. From U2 – Editors – Hot Chip they are all there! No downlaoding it just streams online. This is a great way of sampling music before you buy. If you want to stick on your ipod then you will obviously need to buy, from your favourite download store… But really I love this.

Other services have been around like this then disapeared. I hope this one can hold its ground and stay. I am sure integration with a online mp3 store is coming soon. You can also integrate with last.fm!

In 1774, Hahn designed a truly usable calculating machine for all four types of calculation. He employed stepped drums, which Leibniz had used before, arranging them in a circular manner so that his machine appears to be similar externally to Leupold’s. The machine gave complete satisfaction up to values having 12 digits. It is believed by some that Thomas de Colmar used Hahn’s machine as a prototype some 50 years later and created his Arithmometer based on it. The Thomas has several main characteristics in common with the Hahn. It has not been established how many models of this machine were produced.

Squirrel Juice is a random name I came up with after throwing ideas around with a friend. We spent then next 30 minutes working out how to juice a Squirrel and trying to imagine what it would taste like. It was decided that it depends on the method of juicing.

This blog was created as a place for me to start a “Conversation and all that…” about topics of interest to me in relation to the internet, music, marketing, virals, ARGs, social media and random content that is good, yeh.
